Not strictly pertaining to Seton, but related..... Has anyone read ‘Endangered Species, The Bart and The Bounder’s Countryside Year’ co-written by Richard Heygate and Mike Daunt (Seton’s second cousin and father) and published in 2007? It is not the sort of book I would normally choose but when I spotted a copy on my brother’s bookshelf I was unable to resist having a read. The book is amusingly descriptive and based upon adventures shared by the two men whilst enjoying various country persuits. These include rat-catching, Trout-tickling, wildfowling, boar-hunting and eating hedgehog with the Romany. For anyone who is in the habit of boar-hunting there is a tasty recipe which may be of interest on page 75!!!

So that's what you were reading and chuckling at on the train back from London?! May I be first in the queue to borrow it please? Is Mike the Bart or the Bounder?

Shall I prepare some apple sauce? I'm only halfway through the book. There's no mention of Seton yet but there is a charming account of Mike teaching his two youngest children (Hugh and Tara) to fish in the chapter I am reading currently. The book is dedicated to all four of his children.

That last reply made me titter! My husband is a gamekeeper so I know a little of country life - enough to be interested in this book anyway. I'll order a copy. Thanks for the tip off Bee. From what you say Mike sounds like a bit of a character. Isn't a 'bounder' traditionally a gentleman of a slightly dubious nature?

Very amusing. I see now where Seton gets that mischievous twinkle in his eyes. I have always wanted to try my hand at tickling trout. I love fish and splashing around in rivers
