Today marks the 6th Anniversary of the release of Fiction Plane's debut, EVERYTHING WILL NEVER BE OK.
Released on March 11, 2003, the album took a lot of critics by surprise:
Entertainment Weekly said, "Throw on this London trio's debut and experience immediate rock-royalty recall. Though the band downplays it, lead singer Joe Sumner's reverb-ready wail comes courtesy of his legendary Police-man pops. Fortunately, Sumner also inher-ited a knack for curiously emotive, if cryptic, vocals -- even when overproduction polishes the raw off his most earnest appeals. Pretty good for the Prince of Pain."
Billboard Magazine called it, "one of the most musically satisfying rock debut albums in recent memory. Although Sumner's vocal range and singing style bear unmistakable resemblances to his father, he and his bandmates demonstrate an impressive range of songwriting, from the riveting post-hardcore movements of "Silence" and "Wise" to breathless melodic rockers such as "Cigarette" and "Listen to My Babe." The album crackles with the intensity that comes only from a band playing live together in one room."
HMV said, "From the lead track, "Listen to My Babe," it is immediately apparent that London's Fiction Plane is turning alternative rock on its head. Led by Sting progeny Joe Sumner, Fiction Plane injects a punk-funk sense of melody into its music, making it difficult to compare to any other band on the scene. Stylistically playful and lyrically cynical, there is very little filler on the band's debut release. There is a little piece of magic in each song that makes the entire album hummable long after the disc has ended."
Let's celebrate the birth of an era, and share some memories about, and favorite songs from the first Fiction Plane album!

Ah, I'll never forget the first time I saw them. They opened with "Listen To My Babe." Joe was bopping around the stage with his guitar, acting like some kind of swaggering chicken. Hahahaha.
Anyway, although that was my introduction to them, my favorite songs have to be "Bongo" and "Silence". I think I'm sounding like a broken record here, because I swear I've mentioned that before elsewhere.
EWNBO is definitely an album that ages well.

I will never tire of this album! I was first introduced to FP back in 2004 by a friend from Canada. I was hooked immediately!
I was very excited to hear FP would be opening some of the shows for the Broken Music tour in 2005. The set opened up with "Listen to My Babe." I still remember that moment vividly. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times that year. Was so great to see them play the Paradise Lounge in Boston. Such great energy!

I love the title track, the lyrics "There'll always be some part of you in pain" Simply Brilliant!

I'm sitting here trying to figure out my favorite songs off this album and am shocked I'm coming up with so many!
For sentimental reasons, I'll always be partial to "Listen to my babe" since it was also my intro to FP, but there are so many other good songs too. "Fallow", "Bongo", "Silence", "Wise", " Hate"... all fantastic songs in my book!
This album really does hold up well!

Wow, where did those six years go? I'm a little wiser but not looking a day older - I wish! LOL! Nice to read those old reviews again. My favourite EWNBO tracks have always been Wise and Hate. Just love them both!

I just joined after surfing all Fiction Plane fan sites for a bit. This one looks like the friendliest and probably the most welcoming for new Fiction Plane fans. Here's hoping anyway!!! ;D I am learning so much from those here who have known this band for a long time and am listening to Everything Will Be OK for the first time now. The guys sound so young! I think I am going to like this albums as well as Sparks. I'm just three tracks in and it's a thumbs up so far!

Another new member and from my part of the globe too. How wonderful! How was EWNBO (you must have heard it in its entiirity by now?) Do you have copies of FP's other albums as well? I haven't found a new band to enjoy for a while so I envy you the excitement of discovering FP. It was ages ago for me but I still remember how good it felt - better than chocolate, almost as good as sex?!!!! Tee-hee-hee!!! ;D
