Just received this press release:
FICTION PLANE's new album 'Sparks' to be released through Roadrunner Records on May 3
Fiction Plane has licensed its third album, Sparks, to Roadrunner Records for Europe (excluding the UK), the Middle East, and Africa.
Sparks follows Left Side of the Brain, which was released in May 2007 and featured the popular single "Two Sisters". The band spent much of the following two years touring the album, supporting The Police on their world tour, and The Feeling, Snoop Dogg, and 311 during their respective summer tours in 2008. They also played a number of successful European headline tours and festivals such as Pinkpop, Festival Des Vieilles Charrues, Rock Im Park, and Rock Am Ring.
Sparks was recorded in the latter half of 2009, together with producer Paul Corkett (Nick Cave, Biffy Clyro, Bjork and Placebo). The LP combines the band’s live energy and highly imaginative songwriting.
Sparks, will be available in two different versions - a standard version and a limited edition with three bonus tracks. Both versions are due for release on 3rd of May 2010.
Album Track Listing: 1. You Know You're Good (La La La Song) 2. Out Of My Face 3. Push Me Around 4. Talking 5. Revenge 6. Two Sparks 7. Tommy 8. Humanoid 9. Zero 10. Russian LSD 11. Denied Bonus Tracks Limited Edition 12. Angel Eyes 13. Telephone Unknown 14. Sadr City Blues (Acoustic) Front man Joe Sumner said that the partnership with Roadrunner records was “like dolphins ganging up on a shark. It's great to feel like our label won't be eating prawn sandwiches unless we are, too."
In support of the album, the band will play the European summer festival circuit before heading out on a European headline tour in the fall.
Album release dates in other global territories will be announced soon.

:-/Firstly, I'm not at all stoked about the title...Sparks?! My first and current thought, :-[LAME TITLE. Pales in comparison to every album title they've had since 2001, and to all of the titles we made up in our heads. Secondly, are we folks over here in the States and Canada going to be able to purchase a domestic edition of this, or are we going to have to go the "import" route? Yet again, are the domestic labels disinterested, or is this just stage one in the release process, with "Region 1" to come later? Thirdly, I'm disappointed that some of the unreleased/single released songs we've heard on-line over the last year and a half don't seem to be having official presentations on the new LP. Odd that there will be a double disc version, w/ only 3 bonus tracks...Wolfmother's new album came in two different editions, single and double album versions, w/ the other songs incorporated in the original edit of the album...why not include much of the out-of-the-way material that has yet to grace one of their releases? This is where a vote by the fans for the most sought after songs (What?! No "Put on Your Shoes" when you've got a full 80 min. second disc?! Eh, Huh?) would've been great. I wonder if the US edition might have more songs, but I don't think so, since their audience is really Europe at the moment.
I'm hoping that the 11 songs we get are really KILLER, to justify the limited amount. My guess is everybody will probably buy the special edition. But at what price? And from what record/music store, since they never seem to be drowning in FP music.
I'm still going to stay positive and open-minded about this release, but already a slightly curious/disturbing portent. Maybe it'll all work itself out by May.
Thanks for the heads up!

I wonder if the US edition might have more songs, but I don't think so, since their audience is really Europe at the moment. From what I've heard and read, those demoed songs always die an unfortunate death. FP have racked up probably 60-70 demo songs that have never, and probably will never see a proper release. As for "Put On Your Shoes," that was actually released on the Japanese version of Left Side. And based on the press release, it doesn't even look like a North American release is on the horizon. For some reason, Roadrunner Europe and Roadrunner North America aren't actually the same company. I think the most bizarre thing about the licensing deal is that it doesn't even include distribution in their base of operations - the UK! 'Tis definitely a strange situation.

I'll say this much: Thank God we've got "Cut your brakes/a.k.a La, La, La song" and ;D"Zero" (which is a F'N GREAT SONG! If you want a preview of what I believe is this new tune, go to YOUTUBE and type in, "Fiction Plane interview at bospop". The song is played for the 1st 35 seconds (put your headphones into your computer!), then heard in the distance as the guys are being interviewed after the concert...all 3 are killing w/ that performance...must have been one of the tunes that got them to rethink/re-record the new album...this song needs to be one of the singles released -- SCREAMS FICTION PLANE). If what you said is true about Roadrunner, how is this such a choice situation for FP? There must be something over the horizon that we don't know about. I guess Pete wasn't lying when he said, "We have so many unreleased songs, we're gonna have one hell of a box set to release 20 years from now." Indeed.

Yes but more importantly, when is the new release by Scrotum Death Clamp coming out? ....btw, I was about to hit post when I saw that I left off the "p" in Clamp. I think Scrotum Death CLAM is a much better band name.

I like "Sparks" for a title, but "Scrotum Death Clam" comes in at a very close second.
Sometimes I think being an FP fan is an exercise in frustration. First they have a label, then they don't, then they do again and grrr they leave it. But, on the bright side, FP seems to draw over-achievers to their fan base. This way you can be sure that if Joe, Seton and Pete so much as hum a tune while touring an obscure region of an obscure island in an obscure part of the planet, at least one fan will be there and record the whole thing for the rest of us (who fear going places where National Geographic hasn't even been).
So yeah, I agree with the earlier post expressing frustration but it has always been this way. We just get creative about ways to share music with each other and try not to put too much pressure on the band. Hey, if they come out with music we'll hear it right?
