Two friends and I met up at the Monkey Chews public house in Chalk Farm, north London, for Illegalmoveman's most recent gig (28th May 2008.) We caught up with each other's news and I smiled to myself when I saw Joe arrive in style - on his skateboard! He had time to chat to some of us before the gig and admitted to being a little nervous. He had a squeaky monkey toy with him for comfort! His audience was small but we gave him plenty of support. Most of the songs he performed were new and so unknown to us, but we all sang along enthusiastically to My Mates, Two Sisters and Drink. He wooed us with that tiny accustic guitar that I adore and sounded as great as ever. There was just enough time to thank him and wish him well with the US tour before heading off to catch the last train home. I have attached a pic of the man in action.

Well that's something I have in common with Joe. I don't ride a skateboard, but have always had a passion for toy monkeys, lol!

Hello Michele, Welcome to the message board. Nice to meet you! Teddy bears are my thing. I have quite a collection. Meet my favourite, JB (Joe Bear), in the 'Fun with hats' thread ;D

I might be going to London in January (I know! Who goes to London in January right?) and I have to have to have to hit "The Chews." Way back in the day when the guys had left MCA but before they got onto Everybody's Records they would record a few songs at Monkey Chews and send them out to a handful of fans to distribute. "Presuppose" was one of those tracks. I love those rough, acoustic early tracks and would love to see where they were first performed.

I never knew they were recorded there! I went to London in March of 2005 and the weather was BEAUTIFUL! I actually got a sunburn! Who gets a sunburn in England in March? No matter what the weather, you will enjoy the city!

YES! I will argue over and over....what a surprise it was to hear a new version of Presuppose on LSOTB. I love that version but am still partial to the acoustic one. Likewise, I still prefer "Better Guy" to "It's A Lie". However, I am REALLY glad they turned "Sleep Walker" into "Anyone".

I'd like to say that I have more inside information about the songs but...no, no I don't. My knowledge is a shallow well and we have just reached the bottom of it.

Me too, Nicole. There was just something about the acoustic version of the song that struck a chord in me.

I like "Better Guy" too. Much more moody then the current version. But I understand why they changed it, it needed a hook that would get stuck in your head. It's still an awesome song... and it makes a much better single than "Better Guy" would have. I agree 100% about "Sleepwalker"...

Me too, Nicole. There was just something about the acoustic version of the song that struck a chord in me. I disagree. I really like the more rock/"plugged in" version of Presuppose. It just seems to fit more for me. Liz
