Yeah! Sounds like a cool place!
He's playing NJ next Friday. I'm definitely going to try to go this time! No excuses!

today is ari hest day! I can't seem to find a time for tonight's show in Portland! One site says 6:30, another says 8:00, and another says 9:00.
So, should I just go and hang out at the bar from 6:30 on?? If I do that and the show isn't until 9:00, I may be falling off the bar stool by then.
Oy. Can anyone help me? Am I just not connecting the dots here?

Oy. Can anyone help me? Am I just not connecting the dots here? Probably the best thing would be to try to call the venue for their timeline. I just went to a show last week with the same issue. There were three times listed, and the band ended up going on an hour later than the last noted time. Not sure if this really helps, but I think the venue would have the final word.

meh. People at the venue don't really know what's going on there. My friend (who lives down the street from the place) says the marquee just says Ari Hest, but no time.
Ari just sent me a message saying he is on around 8, maybe closer to 9. So there you go. From the source.

You will have to let us know what you think Jen. The show in Boston didn't do it for me. Maybe its just me...I don't know!

okay, I'm home from the show. I really liked it. Now keep in mind, this is not a rock and roll show. No drummer. No bass player. Just Ari and his guitars and maybe a song with the keyboard in there. I took a friend of mine and she liked the opening act AND Ari so much she bought both CDs.
I really liked it. Ari was very nice too. As I was walking in, he was walking out and we shook hands and talked for a brief second before he went on. Then after the show, I bought a CD and we talked more for a few seconds. I told him to bring that Wilhoit family with him to the pacific northwest next time he came. he was surprised and asked how I knew Pete.
thanks smithwicks, again, for the music selection. I believe it was you who turned me on to his music.

Just Ari? I remember him saying in Boston he wasn't going to have his band along for the whole tour. I'm glad you enjoyed the show! I think the Boston show would have been more enjoyable had the room been a bit cooler.

So I went to see Ari Hest last Friday in NJ. He had the full band with him (which included Rob Calder- Pete's friend and FP's occasional stand-in bass player). It was a good show, although a little low on energy. I really liked the music and wonder if I would have enjoyed it even more if it was just Ari performing solo. Best songs were "Dead End Driving" and "Cranberry Lake", although the later didn't hold a candle to the studio version Ari did with Amy Kuney.
Ari told this interesting story about the meaning behind "Dead End Driving", about how he wrote it about his friend, a musician, who was struggling to make it without a major record deal. Sound familar?

Rob played at the Boston show as well! Glad you had a good time! Weird the two songs I liked were also the highlight for you!

I liked it because it was very mellow. I just sat back in my little church pew with beer in hand and listened. I really enjoyed it. It was nothing like the energy from an FP show that's for sure. but it was a nice show just to sit and listen to. and the CD is nice to listen to while fixing dinner or winding down from the day.
I'd go see him again definitely.

That's it Jen. You had a place to sit! The venue here in Boston had only a handful of seats which were all taken. I think I would have enjoyed the show a bit more had I had a seat...and the venue was a few degrees cooler!

I'd go see him again too. I really like his music. All I have to do is thing about "Dead End Driving" and it gets stuck in my head. I think when I saw that he had a full band, I just expected something different. And I think Ari was a bit jet lagged from just coming back from the west coast, so I'm cutting him some slack for his lack of energy on stage. I gotta say, I'm impressed with the 12 string guitar he was playing. Wish I was closer to the stage to watch his hands play that thing.

I noticed the 12-string too! I don't think it's too difficult to play from what I have been told.
we had one laying around the house for years and my husband up and donated it to a childrens group home. I'm proud of him for the gesture, but dammit, I wish he would've hung on to it. I thought it was pretty cool.
